Learn To Skate
The Learn to Skate program is designed to teach beginner skaters and new hockey players the fundamental skills of skating. Participants will focus on becoming comfortable on the ice while learning the skills.
Ages
The program is ideal for kids ages 4-7, but we also welcome skaters 3 and up who are ready to learn.

What to Expect
Practices will begin as 30-minute sessions at the start of the season. In January, as the skaters build stamina and ability, we will move into 45-minute sessions.
To keep kids engaged, we incorporate fun games while learning skills, and we also strive to keep the routine consistent, so they always know what to expect.
Equipment
- Helmet (bike, ski, or hockey helmet required)
- Skates (families provide their own; seasonal rentals are available locally and can be a great option)
- Winter gear like coats, snowpants, and gloves for warmth and extra padding
- Neck guards are not required but are strongly recommended for additional safety.
Registration Fees
All skaters must have a valid USA Hockey or Learn to Skate member number before completing registration. Once you have obtained your member number, return to the Mesabi East Learn to Skate registration link to complete your season registration.
Registration fees help cover the cost of ice time for practices and learning equipment. In addition, $60 of each registration fee goes directly to the City of Hoyt Lakes to support arena and recreation fees.
Please note that additional fees apply as part of USA Hockey registration.
Step 1: Obtain Your Membership Number
Every skater is required to have one of the following memberships each season:
- USA Hockey Registration ($17 for birth year 2020 or younger / $58 for birth years 2018–2019):
- Learn to Skate Registration ($20):
If your skater plans to participate in a MEYHA Hockey Programs this season, we recommend registering with USA Hockey.
You will enter your membership number during the Mesabi East registration process.
Step 2: Complete Mesabi East Learn to Skate Registration
After receiving your USA Hockey or Learn to Skate USA member number, proceed to the Mesabi East Learn to Skate Registration to complete your enrollment. If you're using a mobile phone, scroll to the bottom of the page to find the MEYHA link. If you're on a desktop, you'll find it in the white box at the top right corner of the page.
